When I lost my external hard drive to pickpockets from the pocket of my backpack, I got so frustrated because I lost all my files saved for years including some of my sample works in my previous jobs as well as photos of my trips. Carrying your bag on your back leaves you unguarded from crooks. This is when I appreciated the use of a crossbody sling bag such as a messenger. It stays on your side where your hand can guard it from being opened by intruders. Or on your front when you need to access it.
